The Multicultural Association of Carleton County (MACC) held their Annual General Meeting on October 26, 2009. Ten new directors were elected to the Board of Directors with two veteran officers Annette Landman and Janice Kinney taking on new positions on the executive.
A large crowd turned out to hear from staff and executive how MACC has grown and developed in the past year. English Language Training is a very visible component of the services MACC offers to newcomers. With the opening of the satellite classroom at 639 Main Street in Woodstock, MACC is able to offer English Language Training five mornings per week to newcomers in the Woodstock area. There are 28 new students registered to receive language instruction.
August saw the addition of a second new staff person to coordinate the HOST program, which is responsible for partnering newcomers with community members. This encourages integration of the newcomers into the community and fosters harmonious relationships among all cultural groups and individuals.
In Florenceville, Language Instruction continues four mornings per week with Fridays dedicated to modular on-line monitoring of distance students. This system works very well for students who have difficulty attending the classes on a regular basis.
Employment Counselling continues to assist newcomers throughout Carleton County in job placements and to prepare them for the job search process. The Employment Counselor works with individual clients to customize their resumes, prepare them for interview methods and procedures.
Settlement provides services as required by newcomers when they first arrive in Carleton County, including finding accommodations, furnishings, health care, educational services for children, and directions for purchasing amenities for their new life.
MACC hosts: events of cultural flavor which help showcase Carleton County’s diverse selection of ethnic groups; information sessions to give newcomers guidance to integrating into local life; social activities where all cultures are invited to mingle; activities for all the public to experience local and ethnic customs.
All MACC’s services are made possible through funding by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and the Province of New Brunswick.
